Active weather

Alain Briot praised "active weather" in his book Mastering Photographic Composition, Creativity, and Personal Style, of which I wrote some comments. Today we had just such weather, it rained in the morning, but then the sun came out, occasionally hidden by the clouds. And there was even a little bit of fog in deep forests where some snow still remain.

Yesterday I mentioned blue anemones as a sign of spring. Today I saw and managed to capture in a photograph Gonepteryx rhamni, one of the earliest spring butterflies here in Finland. First it was warming up in the sun, but then it hid under a twig and was hard to see there. But it allowed the camera to come very close, so I got quite a good photograph of it.

The rarity of blue anemones

The blue anemone is for me the sign of the spring being really here - an early flower, delicate, persistent. It is not very rare in Finland, but it is forbidden to pick the flowers for sale.

But the rarity I'm referring to in the title is not really about the rarity of the flowers, but rather the uniqueness of each moment, and especially those moments which are spent in taking a photograph - moments in time which will never repeat.

On the other hand, the rarity of a moment does not in itself make a photograph. You also need universality, that is, the photograph has to convey something which the viewer sees as familiar, recognizes a thing or someone there.

It is interesting, this combination of rarity and universality - I guess this is the space where photographs are born, or made.

Complications

I mentioned some time ago that we are doing renovations at home - and we are still doing, and will be doing for some time, thanks to some complications.

I may sound like Eeyore here, but that is not all. It seems that everything that can go wrong, will. Things ordered don't arrive on time. Or they arrive late, and broken. And then companies argue who is to blame.

Also, our car - which I had repaired in a garage three or four times some weeks ago - acted up: one of the headlights went off. Well, after a while I realized a wire had got loose, but this was another hassle.

And so it goes. But I guess it could be even worse. Maybe.
