A fiery finger on the leaves

The photographs were taken on November 17th.

The length of day is now six hours, which means that it is dark when commuting. Today there was a little bit of snowfall in the afternoon, but for the night the weather forecast promises rain.

By my red mind and what it woke

The photographs were taken in Helsinki on November 17th.

This morning the temperature was +6 °C, a difference of 18 degrees compared to yesterday. Depth of snow is 0 cm, and the landscape is black.

We reload our brains as the cameras

The photographs were taken on November 18th in Helsinki.

During the last few days I have been doing hours and hours of shopping with the children. It is much more exhausting than the same amount of walking in forests and swamps.

The house was just twinkling in the moon light

On January 5th I took some photographs while the moon was up and lighted the landscape. All these photographs were taken handheld, and the exposure was between 1/4 and 1 second. The OIS works perfectly on the LX100.

I walk the rainbow in the dark

The length of day is now 17 h 45 min here in Finland, and that is the main reason I haven't posted (or taken) night-time photographs in a while. But here is an exception, the photograph was taken in Vierumäki on May 8th.

I have commuted by bicycle every day this week, and it has been fine, even though we had rain yesterday. Today was warm, +25 °C, and for tomorrow the forecast promises +26 °C.

I have had interesting meetings this week, with people who have original ideas and appreciate discussion. Lack of sleep has bothered a bit, but luckily there are nights when I get 7-8 hours of sleep, and that helps a lot. Sleep is such an important thing which shouldn't be taken for granted.

I have over 1000 photographs waiting to be processed on the computer, but haven't had time to go through them. And then there is the fact that I really would like to take new photographs, but recently there hasn't been much possibility for that during the work week.

And I tried to picture it

On February 2nd my daughter wanted to go ice skating at the school nearby. Since then the snow and ice has been melting away.

I tried to fix the color balance in these photographs, but it is rather difficult, especially when shooting jpegs.

Fair, if you fail, I’ll judge all beauty vain

I'm feeling rather blurry, thus this photograph. When you are traveling, does the landscape change?

How many nights must it take

Here are night-time photographs taken a week ago. I put the LX5 on a mini-tripod, standing on a rock or on ice, but it was difficult to get a precise composition. A tilting screen would be good for this kind of use.

He’d earned the right to happy endings

There are still a couple of days until the shortest day of the year, but it is dark enough, length of day is 5 h 47 min. The weather has been overcast, but yesterday and today were good days for commuting by bicycle, and I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Tomorrow is the last work day this year, two weeks of vacation ahead. Not bad at all, I hope to relax, get a lot of sleep, and read at least a dozen books.

But as they learn to see

On November 19th I went for a walk with my daughter to a nearby lake. It was dark and wet.

Recently I have been commuting by bicycle. It is good to have studded winter tires in the bicycle as the temperature varies between -5 °C...+5 °C. There has been ice covered by snow on the road, and without the winter tires it would have been much less safe to commute. On the other hand, the commute takes 10 minutes longer than during summer, but that can't be avoided.

The forward-flowing tide of time

These photographs were taken handheld while going for a walk on November 16th. On most days there is very little experience of sunlight; the length of day is now 6 h 26 min, and the darkest time looms ahead.

But all at once I saw where my argument must run

Well, the trip to Brussels and back happened without problems. In fact, everything was just about perfect. I was at the meeting place 15 minutes early, and then the meeting started 15 minutes late, so there was time get the necessary paperwork sorted out in a relaxed manner.

And when starting back the Friday afternoon rush hour in Brussels wasn't too bad, and I got to the airport early enough so that I didn't need to stress too much at the security check.

But after 16 hours of traveling and attending the meeting it is good to be back. Here are some night photographs taken on November 16th.

From somewhere so deep inside the earth

Sometimes it is good to point the camera up, to see what is there above. This was Tremanskärr swamp on November 17th after sunset.

That whole time I had been living like someone

Once again, an excessively busy day. I commuted by car, mostly due to logistic reasons but also because of the rain in the morning. While driving to Aalto university this afternoon the car windshield was hit by a small rock (or a stud from winter tires), and the windshield was fractured, and it probably needs to be replaced. I sent a notice to the car insurance company, have to see how it goes with them.

Here are some illuminating photographs of my feeling today. Lots of goals but not much tangible results.

Let us drink and sport to-day

Here are photographs taken yesterday, on the way to Finnish National Opera building in Helsinki, to see a performance where my daughter and her classmates were singing and performing. (See here for some info, in Finnish.)

One of the children has had flu, with fever, since Wednesday, but luckily she was well enough to go see the performance. And I'm having flu symptoms as well, since the night between Thursday and Friday, when I woke up nose and throat all clogged up. I haven't had any fever, and the flu goes in waves. Yesterday morning I was all right, but around noon I got a headache and throat pain, which then let up during the afternoon. And now that seems to be returning back again.

I was planning to take long walks during the weekend, but that might not be such a good idea. Well, perhaps if I walk slowly.

Who having eyes yet never find

This has been a good week for walking. So far I have walked for 5 1/2 hours, or maybe a bit more. It has been sunny and cold, temperature going down to -10...-15 °C at night, and rising to just below 0 °C during afternoon. Good weather for walking, except for the ice which is very slippery in some places. The length of day is 12 h 30 min, which means that there are plenty of hours for walking while the sun is still up. Although sometimes the sun has already set before one manages to go for a walk.
