#2 works well for me. I hope the low camera position is not due to the heavy week ;) This flexibilty when it comes to unusual positions is something I miss in my non-live-view dslr. Even without an articulated screen you are much more flexible to go low or high
With these long exposures (now typically 4-8 seconds at ISO 100 and f/2.0) these angles are becoming a necessity. I have attached a pocketable mini-tripod to the LX3 and put it on top of whatever support there is - tree stumps, rocks, mounds of snow etc.
