That’s no compensation

I took these photographs last weekend, in the forests at Vaakkoi and at north parts of Nuuksio, walking there with my daughters. It was a fine weekend to be out walking, as the cool and rainy weather had not yet started.

My photographs do not look quite the same as last summer, as the click wheel of the LX5 is no longer working and I'm unable to change exposure compensation with it, so I'm using -2/3 EV which on sunny days isn't always what is needed, as -1 EV or -1 1/3 EV would be better.

(Posting title is from the poem Divergences by Gottfried Benn, translated by Michael Hofmann.)

Ah, I did think there was something different about your pictures of late. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but now that you mention the trouble you are having with the exposure compensation I realise that your images are exposed more in a manner that I would choose, namely slightly darker and so a little more saturated than what you normally shoot. I can see, though how frustrating that would be as I imagine you are not able to reproduce what you see in the manner that you wish. That was largely the reason I ended up getting a new camera.

Cedric, it is indeed a bit frustrating to have less scope in the settings, but of course I could switch from aperture priority to program mode or even to the so-called iA mode so that the camera would make choices for me. But I'm getting used to always having the largest aperture (not able to change that either) and only two settings for exposure compensation, -2/3 EV and +1/3 EV, fixed in the custom settings. I'm also using the trick of first focusing and setting the exposure, and only then composing the photograph, which helps with the exposure.
