Something, in the ineffable clips of light

Today I attended a seminar on open science and research which ended with a panel discussion. The discussion was a delight to follow, the best one I have seen and heard in years. The panelists listened to each other and to the questions from audience, thought carefully what they were saying, and seemed to have fun. All were top people in their professions, and even though the questions asked were complex, all were tackled with finesse and clear vision. I wish all work weeks ended like this.

Yesterday I wrote about how the view count of my photographs at Flickr grew by one or two orders of magnitude since getting the Panasonic LX100 camera. This doesn't mean that all my photographs are popular. Almost 10% of them have zero views, which is a bit depressing.

So, here you see somewhat older photographs, all with zero views according to Flickr statistics. These photographs were taken with the Panasonic LX3 between October 4th, 2008, and January 21st, 2009. At that time I hadn't yet grown into square (aka 1:1 aspect ratio).

I commuted by bicycle on four days this week. This year I have so far got 862 km.

(Posting title is from the poem Going to Zero by Peter Balakian.)

Yes.. I am a fan of that level, quality of discussion also..

and glad to learn your walks are not as dangerous as they appear to me..

another great pleasure to visit a new weeks worth of magnificent photography..!

I sometimes get bounced to your flicker account when im just trying to scroll.. but for me personally.. I like to view your photography as it appears in this format.. Stacked vertically above your comments.. And below great titles borrowed from such a variety of poets and song writers..

lastly.. must share: had a customer mention she was from Finland.. "Finland!?!". -so I pulled up your blog on the spot.. Wrote down the name for her.. And she helped me learn how to pronounce your name..

" I have no idea how to pronounce any of these lakes either..". -but anyway.. I sure enjoy the visual hikes, places I can visit but not pronounce..

Have a blessed week ahead!

Zero 3 is fabulous, almost creepy, as if a person under the ice spreads her arms...

Yes, that's the problem with flickr, even good photographs drown in the jpg tsunamis, and to get seen you would probably have to play it like any other (un)social media outlet.

Thanks!

"I have no idea how to pronounce any of these lakes either.." - I'm not always sure myself either, as many of the names of the lakes and swamps etc. are in Swedish, which isn't for me always so easy as Finnish or English. And then Finnish is another matter altogether ... as written in a Swedish novel I read recently: "Finns don't have names, just random sequences of letters."

Of "Zero 3" I have a vague recollection of trying to get an interesting framing when taking the photograph, trying something I hadn't done before, but I have no idea why I didn't use this photograph in a posting before this one. It may be that this recollection is a fabrication of the memory, as easily happens when so long has passed since taking the photograph.

A note about the unreliability of memory: it took me until this time to remember what place is depicted in the first two images. It is lake Myllyjärvi ("Mill lake"), located near lake Bodom. I used to visit this place quite often as the lake is the right size for a walk of an hour or so, but it has been several years since I was there the last time.
