This river points the way north

These photographs were taken last Friday in Joensuu when we went for a walk in the city center. There was a smudge in the camera lens on the left side, generating some visual artifacts, but they seem to fit the subject. The temperature was going downwards at this point, and the length of day was about five hours, Joensuu being farther north than Vantaa.

Today the length of day is 6 hours, which is a kind of milestone towards spring, even though there will be a lot of short winter days still ahead. The change in the length of day, coming back south from the north, feels quite drastic, even though in the difference is only about 1 1/2 hours.

(Posting title is from the poem The River Now by Richard Hugo.)

Is that a real child sitting at the table in the last photo?

No, it is a mannequin. Some of the mannequins in the display were animated, for example Santa Claus and the little reindeer.

I have always liked your night photos very much. You have a very good eye for light and atmosphere through light.
But these unintentional "special effects" are almost topping it.

And no, that's doesn't mean you should stop cleaning your lenses ;-)

Thanks, Martina!

Indeed, greasy fingerprints resulted in somewhat surprising results, and I didn't catch this on the LCD display of the camera.

Maybe one could try putting deliberate fingerprints on the lens of the LX5 when needing a fresh approach to photograph-making, hmmm... I bit like putting a Lensbaby on a DSLR.

You could develop an Instagram filter and get rich and famous ...

Martina, maybe the filter could simulate smudged fingerprints of famous photographers on the lens, promising really unique results. Hmmm...
