What is a good photograph?

After taking thousands of photos this summer, I'm having some trouble in recognizing what are good photos (if any) and what are not. There is so much photography available nowadays that it is difficult to appriciate quality. My snapshots are quite modest attempts at improving photography skills, but the problem is that I don't really know how to proceed. What are my blind spots as regards the elements of good photography?

I know that it takes talent to generate interesting photography, but I don't think it is impossible to develop at least a bit of talent. Or is photography different from, for example, writing? By doing a lot of writing I have learned a lot, and have managed to get several hundred articles, essays and columns published in Finnish magazines. And I have been contributing and editing in several dozen books as well.

So, if I would practise photography diligently for a few years, perhaps a similar skill could be attained? I hope I can improve somewhat. And at least I find some satisfaction and a lot of fun in taking and looking at photos. Thus, the situation seems to be quite promising.
