At the end of the day I did once again some experiments with motion blur and long handheld exposures. It is strange how a little bit of blur may destroy a photo, but a lot can make a photo. 
I'm not quite sure about this one, but at least I found a technique which produces interesting texture to the photos: 3-8 second exposure, slowly moving the camera upwards the tree, stopping occasionally and perhaps reversing the motion. Might be worth experimenting a bit more.
